Even though it’s already fall, there are still plenty of fleas hopping around, ready to jump on your dog.  Fleas aren’t killed off until there are several days or weeks of temperatures below freezing, so if you think you can let up in your flea control because the leaves may be changing colors, think again!

You may also be interested in using beneficial nematodes for your yard. They are small worms which eat flea eggs.

You can find diatomaceous earth and nematodes at your garden store.  Diatomaceous earth can also be used indoors if you would like to sprinkle it on your carpets or floors and leave it down for a couple of days, then vacuum it up.  It works the same way indoors that it works outside, exposing the soft parts of the fleas to the atmosphere and allowing them to dry out.  Your pets won't be harmed if they ingest it.  Some people even give it to dogs as a wormer, but it requires daily doses to work.
