There's nothing more terrifying then a dogs cough, and truth be told it probably sounds more serious than it is. While humans have the luxury of hot tea and a cough drop when they are hacking up who knows what, dogs coughs are a mystery. Many times you may be under the impression your dog is sick, or choking. Before you make the rash decision to spend hundreds of dollars on a vet visit, use process of elimination and home prevention to treat your dogs cough.
Coughing can be a symptom of several things; the most common is kennel cough. If your pet has spent time in around other dogs, at the vet, or in a boarding facility this is probably the most likely verdict. Kennel cough is a dry, hoarse cough and can be treated by simply keeping your dog away from other animals for awhile. Roundworms and heart worms can also cause coughing and sneezing in dogs, but if you are using a preventative this shouldn't be an issue. Coughing and sneezing can also be blamed on an allergy to food, or an item in your house so use process of elimination to determine what can stay, and what has to go.
If you've got a pet that's coughing and sneezing, don't fret. Installing a humidifier is a great way to ease discomfort during nap, and night time if your dog is having trouble breathing. Eliminating items that cause allergy is another simple way to rid your pet of an uncomfortable cough, and spending the extra money for a pet sitter instead of a boarding facility, where germs are unavoidable.
