About Dog Constipation

If your dog has gotten into your snack stash and inhaled chocolate, cookies, ice cream, or other sweets he may be struggling to get rid of those yucky sugars now. Pieces of rawhide or other bone have have been swallowed whole can also cause bowel blockage, so when dealing with pooch constipation, it's important that you remember what your pet has had to eat within the past day or two. Dogs that are overweight, and under exercised also struggle with constipation; if your dog isn't the most active pet, this is probably one of the causes!

You will notice if your dog is constipated if you haven't witnessed a bowel movement in a day or two. If your dog is going to the bathroom, but you find that his stools are tiny and resemble rocks more than feces, you may have a slight problem on your hand...dogs that are avoiding their food and seem wary of you when you say “gotta  go out..” also may be dealing with constipation. While most cases aren't serious, it's still important that you keep an eye on your pet to avoid discomfort.

If your dog is suffering, try to get him moving! A long walk can loosen up some of his bowels and he'll be able to go within a few hours of exercise. If that doesn't work, an all natural stool relaxer can also be helpful for those stubborn bouts of constipation...monitoring your dogs diet, and feeding a healthy food can also play a part in constipation so make sure that your dog isn't suffering from reactions to the pet food you're feeding him/her. Increasing fiber intake is another option, and you can sprinkle oats on top of your pets food to act as a natural laxative. The main thing is to avoid any medications that will cause allergic reactions, and do more harm then good.
