Dog Coat and Skin problems

Skin issues are the most common ailment your dog can face; whether your pet spends hours chewing at a hot spot on his leg, or seems to be loosing hair in patches you find around the house, skin and coat problems are the most talked about amongst pet owners. They are also the most tricky!  Just when you think you have solved the great “hot spot” mystery, another will flare up. Skin disorders are anything that causes rashes, inflammation, itchy tender skin, or patches of baldness.

We just mentioned a few key words like “inflammation, and bald patches...” and these are the most common signs that your dog has something going on with his coat, and skin. Some dogs can tolerate discomfort more than others, and you won't notice anything until clumps of hair are finding their way to your floor. Some will scratch so hard, and so often, that the skin becomes especially red, and irritated. No matter what the symptoms, you can bet that it's uncomfortable for your dog and home prevention is a must. On some occasions these symptoms are a sign of an allergy to something in your home, food, or shampoo. If you've already eliminated the possibility of an allergy, it may be signs of a parasite like fleas, that are finding their way to your dogs coat. Mange is another possibility, and this is common in dogs that have been spending time in packs, or outside; it's a mite that gets it's way under the skin and causes itchy, scratchy symptoms.

The best way to prevent skin and coat issues, are to feed your dog a healthy diet. Food allergies are one of the most common causes behind inflammation of your pets skin, and a healthy diet is key to keeping things soft and sleek.. Giving bi-weekly or monthly baths using all natural soaps can also eliminate dirt and dander that may be causing discomfort under the skin; avoid using highly perfumed shampoos because they will undoubtedly make the skin more irritated!
