About Dog Allergies

Sneezy, itchy, runny noses anyone? Allergies aren't just for humans! Your dog can be allergic to everyday items around the house, and it's up to you to figure out the culprit. You may notice that your dog has allergies if he's constantly sporting bald patches of fur, where he's scratched or nibbled away until there's nothing left, or rashes on his/her belly or thighs. These are the most common symptoms that your dog is having some sort of allergic reaction, and normally the most easy to spot. Some dogs also feature many of the symptoms we do like a runny nose, but this doesn't mean that their nose is the culprit, since the ears and skin are most commonly affected if your dog suffers from allergies.

The cause of allergies can be a huge number of things! Some symptoms are caused by an allergy to something in your home, whether it's a certain kind of cleaner you use on the floor, or a material that's on your couch. These are also the most difficult to place because it could be any number of things, and you need to use careful observation and process of elimination to figure out the culprit. Mold and pollen can  also be part of the problem, and these are the allergies that can be determined depending on where your dog is hanging out, and what the season is. Food can also cause allergic reactions in dogs, and this is why it's important to feed your dog wholesome, holistic foods instead of run of the mill pet food at your local market. Your dog may be allergic to the additives used in his/her food, corn, wheat, or even pork and lamb.

If you are under the impression your dog suffers from allergies, there are several routes to take. The first would be to determine the cause. If you think it's an item in your home, or a product of something floating in the air like mold or pollen, an oatmeal bath is a fine treatment. If food is an issue, try to figure out what ingredients are in the food that you currently by; if it's filled with corn and preservatives those are probably the reasoning behind allergies, and a homemade menu of something simply, like brown rice and chicken can be introduced until a few brand of pet food is chosen.
