Dog Asthma and Kennel Cough

If your dog has been in boarding lately, you were probably asked about a kennel cough vaccine. Kennel cough is exactly what it says: a nasty cough that is commonly passed amongst pets who have spent time together in closed conditions [ie: a vet, or boarding facility...] While it isn't deadly, it's a hassle and uncomfortable for your pet. The difference between kennel cough, and asthma is that one is continuous and the other will clear up over time.

Your dog may have kennel cough if he's spent time in a boarding facility, and comes home with a nasty, dry cough that sounds like he's got a few bites of food stuck in his throat. A dog with asthma will have a similar cough, but will also feature other signs of being ill, like a lack of energy or willingness to chow down on his food. Asthma can be dangerous in our pets because it can close airways, making it impossible to breath. It's better to nip it before it can get too bad, and prevention is the best way to “cure” both kennel cough and asthma in dogs.

The best prevention for something like kennel cough, is to simply get a pet sitter instead of boarding in a facility. You can find one on line at sites like Sitter City, or Craigslist. Ashman is a bit harder to prevent, because it can be permanent, in which case on-going treatment will be necessary. If you think that your dog is suffering, it may be due to allergies in the home, or general personality issues that are causing nervousness that results in wheezing and gagging. Rule these two possibilities out before looking into a vet care! If your dog has long, unmanageable hair that is getting caught in his airways, give him a trim and see how if conditions improve.
